Prolactin receptors

The action of hormones is largely due to the action of receptors. In the case of prolactin, it is customary to speak of transmembrane receptors, which act not only at the membrane level, but also in terms of interaction with various intracellular structures. The greatest accumulation of such receptors, naturally, is observed in the mammary glands.

But in addition to special female organs, prolactin receptors are also found in other organs and parts of the body. For example, they talk about the localization of such receptors in the liver, heart, spleen, lungs, kidneys and adrenal glands, organs of the reproductive system, even in the muscles of the skeleton. It is difficult to say where the prolactin receptors are absent, they are even in some parts of the central nervous system.

Disruption of prolactin

The normal content of prolactin in the body does not bother a woman, but rather contributes to the realization of maternal functions, the main of which is feeding a baby.But sometimes due to various reasons, the level of prolactin in the body varies, and this can lead to bad consequences and disorders. Of the violations of prolactin, the most critical are the increase and decrease of prolactin.

The increase in the number of prolactin in the body can be caused by pharmacological (use of drugs), surgical (associated with the transferred operations) causes, etc.

The consequences can be from minor, for example, menstrual disorders, to the most severe - violations in the mental health of a woman. There may also be a decrease in sexual desire, an increase in breast size, etc.

The reasons for reducing the content of prolactin are similar to the reasons for its increase, but they, in turn, are largely associated with the course and development of the pregnancy process. The most common disorder associated with a decrease in the content of prolactin in the body is called Sheehan syndrome.
