I was just diagnosed with osteoarthritis in my hip. My doctor recommends that I stop hiking, playing tennis, and participating in other physical activities that I've used to stay fit. To maintain a healthy weight, I have to modify my diet. I've been told that a gluten-free diet is good for curbing inflammation. What other modifications can help me keep my weight down?

While a gluten-free diet is helpful for patients with celiac disease, it has not been shown to change the disease course of osteoarthritis. Neither have any particular foods been shown to be more effective than others in the treatment of osteoarthritis. In general, any healthy diet plan that contains the proper nutrients should work well for weight loss if portion sizes are controlled.

Because obesity is a contributing factor in the development of osteoarthritis, losing weight and maintaining a healthy weight are key components in the management of knee and hip osteoarthritis.
